Humble Beginnings
After lengthy visits for more than a decade, we finally settled in Uganda in 2021 like refugees on planet Covid. Strange times in a world gone mad.
Bottled up in the Middle East for over a year – and now couped up for months on end in Entebbe – we set up Meanda Uganda Limited almost as a cry for freedom and to reflect our passion for camping and overland travel. To be ready – when the shackles came off – for a liberated world with a thirst for adventure.

For me, this passion had developed over a lifetime: hitch-hiking, motorbikes, motorhomes, 4×4. Always roadtrips – always independent. From Highlands to Himalyas – Arctic to Africa. Deserts and mountains – coast to coast.
For my wife, a willing accomplice on countless escapades over more than a decade, an opportunity to explore her native country, Uganda, and to open it up for others.
Meanda Uganda – with the strap line “Wayward Adventure Tours” – was formed. We operated for the first year or two more as a hobby than a business. Passion – that word again – with an occasional profit. Honing our approach and knowledge of Uganda.
We delivered ever more ambitious tours to friends, friends of friends and eventually, complete strangers – who in the course of a tour – became friends! 4×4 overland and a few motorcycle tours. Everyone seemed to love the concept – we were onto something. Our first overland truck – a modified Pajero, was wearing out and we began developing our version of the ultimate overland vehicle for Uganda, taking delivery of our new Hilux in early 24.
We remained oblivious to how unique the overland concept was – and its manifestation in our Hilux overland vehicle. This at least, until driving it through Uganda for the first time, seeing the turned heads and realizing there is nothing else quite like it in Uganda. This is our prototype: the strength of a rhino; the reliability of a Toyota; the versatility of a Swiss Army knife; and the capability of a small hotel!

Two years on and we have relaxed our ‘total camping’ concept to deliver an ‘overland mix’ of camping and lodges. We have evolved to deliver ‘lodge only’ tours with perhaps an adventurous one or two nights’ camping? And we have partnered with some new friends to reflect a lifetime love of motorcycle adventure and deliver adventure motorcycle tours – with an overland blend of camping and lodges.

To keep it simple, we focus almost entirely on Uganda. The choice – is how you want to do it. It just depends on your appetite for adventure and thirst for adrenaline.
And if anybody out there wants to talk cycling – please do get in touch.
